JUNE'S SPECIAL EDITION MAG IS THE FLYING TIGER MAG!

The Flying Tiger airplane design refers to the distinctive shark-face nose art that adorned the fighter aircraft of the American Volunteer Group (AVG) during World War II. The AVG was a group of volunteer pilots who flew for the Chinese Air Force against Japan in the early stages of the war.

The origin of the Flying Tiger design can be traced back to the individuality and creativity of the AVG pilots. The group's commander, Colonel Claire Lee Chennault, encouraged the pilots to personalize their aircraft to boost morale and create a fearsome image. The idea of painting shark teeth on the nose of the airplanes is believed to have been inspired by similar markings used by the Royal Air Force's No. 112 Squadron, known as the "Shark Squadron," during World War I.

The Flying Tiger design featured a set of large, white teeth painted on the nose of the aircraft, giving the impression of a shark about to attack. Some planes also had eyes painted near the cockpit, further enhancing the intimidating effect. The design was intended to strike fear into the enemy and boost the morale of the pilots.

The shark-face nose art became iconic and synonymous with the AVG's Curtiss P-40 Warhawk fighters. It represented the bravery and tenacity of the volunteer pilots who faced overwhelming odds in the defense of China.

The Flying Tigers, as they were commonly known, achieved remarkable success during their service in China, shooting down numerous Japanese aircraft and gaining a reputation for their combat skills. Their distinctive nose art became a symbol of the AVG's fighting spirit and remains an enduring symbol of World War II aviation.
